CMST · Sayura Pasela
The Ocean School
Sayura Pasela is to build ocean literacy in the young minds whose choices will shape the ocean's future. This is designed to help students critically understand why the ocean matters to our own existence, the pressing environmental challenges it faces today, and what genuine care for it actually requires.
Sayura Pasela Guiding Vision
Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST)
The Philosophy
Learning that begins where the land meets the water
Most students in Sri Lanka grow up only a short distance from the ocean, yet marine biology is rarely experienced firsthand. Sayura Pasela bridges that gap with structured, immersive, and inquiry-based learning.
We empower learners to ask questions directly to natural ecosystems, observing intertidal adaptations, testing water chemistry, and recording data just as marine scientists do in the field.
In-Situ Exploration
Tide pools, mangroves, and reef margins serve as natural living laboratories where theory immediately transforms into discovery.
Real Scientific Tools
Students use handheld refractometers, quadrats, transect tapes, and field microscopes to experience genuine marine fieldwork.
Ready to host a Pasela workshop?
We collaborate directly with schools, science clubs, and education authorities.
What it involves
Four pillars of the Ocean School experience
Every Sayura Pasela engagement combines structured observation, scientific rigor, and deep respect for the marine world.
Ocean Literacy
Connecting classroom concepts to real waters
Understanding how the ocean shapes life and how human activity shapes the ocean. We explore Sri Lankan examples, reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and fisheries that communities depend upon.
Hands-On Science
Measuring, sampling & recording real data
Students record real data using simplified, age-appropriate versions of the techniques CMST researchers deploy in the field, from salinity checks to plankton observation.
Field Experience
Learning directly on the coastline
Sessions are held at the shoreline, rocky tide pools, lagoons, and reef edges, moving beyond textbook diagrams into tactile, unforgettable outdoor encounters.
Teacher Support
Empowering educators beyond the visit
Comprehensive curriculum guides, lesson plans, and follow-up activities so educators can sustain marine science topics throughout the school year without needing a resident scientist.
Curriculum
Structured learning modules
Customizable modules designed to adapt to different grade levels, from primary school introductory discovery to advanced high school ecological field methods.
